Rail traffic between Salerno and Battipaglia was suspended late in the morning after a suspected wartime explosive device was discovered at a construction site near Pontecagnano railway station.
According to Il Mattino Salerno, circulation on the Salerno–Paola–Reggio Calabria line was stopped from 10:00 between Battipaglia and Salerno. Technicians from Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and law-enforcement personnel responded to the scene.
The area around the site was cordoned off pending the arrival of bomb-disposal specialists. No details were released on the type, size, or origin of the device.
The disruption affected high-speed, Intercity, and regional services, with possible delays, cancellations, and shortened routes. Travellers were reported waiting near Battipaglia station for replacement bus services.
