Benevento has issued the landscape authorization for the “Sport Illumina” playground planned on Via Vittime di Nassiriya. The project has funding of 200,000 euros and covers an intervention area of about 700 square metres, with facilities for basketball and volleyball.

The site is on Via Vittime di Nassiriya, near the multi-storey car park and the Vanvitelli bridge, in an area described in the local report as currently degraded. The 700-square-metre playground sits inside a fenced area of about 1,500 square metres.

What is planned

The project provides a court for basketball and volleyball, with coloured resin surfacing and anti-trauma rubber flooring. The planned fittings include street furniture, bicycle racks, and LED lighting with photovoltaic modules and integrated batteries.

The combination of sports surfacing, furniture, cycle parking and self-powered lighting follows the Sport Illumina approach of creating modular, inclusive and functional spaces for sport and recreation in public, openly accessible areas.

Why landscape clearance was needed

The area falls within the landscape protection belt of the Calore river and in a Type A archaeological zone. The landscape authorization was therefore issued after the required assessment process for those protections.

That authorization covers only landscape aspects. It does not by itself constitute a building title: further urban-planning, building, environmental and safety approvals remain necessary before works can proceed.

How Sport Illumina works

Sport Illumina is an initiative promoted by the Minister for Sport and Young People through the Department for Sport, implemented by Sport e Salute. Its stated aim is to turn public areas into sports, recreation and community spaces accessible to residents.

Under the official programme, playgrounds are for free and open access. Sport e Salute is responsible for design, construction, management and maintenance for six years from inauguration, with subsequent management passing to the municipality.

The national call distinguishes small, medium and large playgrounds according to the population of the municipality. The Benevento project is described in the local report as a small-type playground.

What happens next

No confirmed date has been reported for the start of construction or for completion of the works. No opening calendar, activity programme or inauguration date is documented in the sources acquired.

The next step depends on the remaining permits and technical approvals. The full executive design, with detailed plans and site-specific renderings for the Benevento area, was not available in the sources acquired.
