Joint environmental controls have been intensified in the Terra dei Fuochi area under the direction of the prefects of Naples and Caserta, according to reports from Metropolis Web, ANSA and NapoliToday.
The operation involved Carabinieri, local police forces and Army personnel assigned to the Strade Sicure-Terra dei Fuochi operation, led by the Lancieri di Aosta Regiment.
Patrols and vehicle checks
Authorities reported approximately 800 patrol services and checks of 3,500 vehicles.
Sixty vehicles were seized. That total includes 27 vehicles placed under criminal seizure for alleged illegal waste transport without the required registration with the National Register of Environmental Operators.
Authorities also reported 68 people referred to judicial authorities and one arrest.
Municipalities and sites inspected
The reported checks covered Afragola, Boscoreale, Brusciano, Casoria, Frignano, Giugliano in Campania, Parete, San Marcellino, Volla and Grazzanise.
Investigators reported 25 seizures during 31 checks of companies and production sites. The reports also describe five seizures in checks of the naval-construction supply chain.
Concealed cameras and waste abandonment
Concealed investigative cameras were used to pursue eight waste-abandonment incidents, including cases in Boscoreale and San Paolo Belsito. The other municipalities named in connection with those camera-based cases were Giugliano, Gricignano di Aversa and Orta di Atella.
The reports also describe two suspected waste fires in the Giugliano area.
Grazzanise seizure
In Grazzanise, authorities reported the seizure of an area of approximately 2,000 square metres containing about 150 cubic metres of construction waste, including asbestos-containing material.
