Families of children attending the infant section of the San Marco school complex in the Cicerone district of Castellammare di Stabia raised the alarm on 15 October 2026 after rats were reportedly seen inside the school. The complex was subsequently closed.

The San Marco complex belongs to the San Marco-Bonito Comprehensive Institute. According to local press reporting, the reported sightings involved areas near Sections B and G and the canteen.

A school circular dated 14 October said an initial sighting had occurred on 13 October in Building D, followed by another sighting on 14 October. The school reported that it had notified the municipality and sent an urgent follow-up because no intervention by the competent authorities had yet taken place.

Some parents said they had not been informed promptly and asked for clarification, deratisation, sanitation work, or closure of the complex.

What is not yet confirmed is how long the closure will last and under what conditions the complex will reopen. No municipal or local health authority statement confirming the closure, deratisation, or sanitation work was available in the reporting, and neither the number of rodents nor any health consequences has been established.
