Prison police at the Poggioreale prison in Naples have seized nine illicit mobile phones and a precision scale, in what local press describes as a new major seizure inside the facility.
According to Metropolis Web, which attributes the information to the prison police and to representatives of the Uspp prison-police union, the seized items comprised eight recent-generation smartphones and one micro-cellphone, along with the precision scale.
Uspp representatives Giuseppe Moretti and Ciro Auricchio praised the operation by the prison police and called for stronger technological tools to counter the entry of illicit phones and other prohibited items.
The union representatives also pointed to difficult working conditions at Poggioreale, reporting a prison population of approximately 2,300 people and a staffing shortage. Those figures were presented as Uspp statements; no independently cited institutional dataset was available in the sources reviewed.
Part of a repeated pattern
The latest seizure follows an earlier operation at Poggioreale in April 2026, when 17 mobile phones and 200 grams of drugs were seized, according to NapoliToday, also citing Uspp representatives.
More broadly, recent local reporting describes repeated attempts to move illicit phones and drugs into Poggioreale, including through drones, according to NapoliToday and Sarno Notizie. Sarno Notizie reports drone-related incidents involving attempts to introduce phones and drugs into Campanian prisons, including Poggioreale.
What remains unclear
The Metropolis Web report does not state the precise date or the exact location inside the prison where the latest phones and scale were found.
The suggestion that the precision scale may have been intended for preparing drug doses comes from the union representatives and is not independently confirmed in the available sources. No official police or Justice Ministry communiqué confirming the latest seizure was found.
