A new Regione Campania report on gender representation in local government shows slow progress for women, with mayoral offices and provincial leadership still overwhelmingly male. The figures are updated to 22 July 2026 and cover municipalities, the Metropolitan City of Naples, the four provinces, and regional institutions.
Only 7.4% of mayors are women
Campania has 40 women mayors, representing 7.4% of the 537 mayors counted. Municipalities under commissioners are excluded from that total.
The gap narrows inside municipal councils and executives, but remains wide. Women account for 43.3% of municipal assessors and 28.8% of municipal councillors. When mayors are included with municipal executives, the combined share of women falls to 35.1%.
Compared with the previous assessment, the report records increases on all three municipal measures: women mayors rose from 5.02% to 7.4%, women assessors from 42.45% to 43.3%, and women municipal councillors from 27.43% to 28.8%.
No women lead the provinces
No woman is president of a Campania province.
Women's representation in the councils of the Metropolitan City of Naples and Campania's four provinces does not exceed 23%. The lowest share is 5% in the Metropolitan City of Naples council; the highest is 23% in Avellino's provincial council.
At regional level, the report records four women assessors and ten women councillors out of forty councillors.
A 70-30 overall balance
Across the fundamental governing bodies of local authorities and the region, the report describes an overall composition of approximately 70% men and 30% women.
