Less than three weeks after its inauguration, the new playground in via Lamaria in Torre del Greco has been vandalized. Unknown persons damaged the main court, the two murals and several elements of the parkour area, according to local press reports published on 5 November 2026.
The damage affected the main playing surface, the two murals decorating the site, some bolts in the parkour zone and a Bluetooth speaker. Paint stains and cigarette butts were also reported at the site.
Following the report, the area was cleaned and the scheduled sports activities resumed.
The Municipality said it intends to file a complaint with law enforcement and to strengthen protection of the site, including through video surveillance. No further details on suspects, the exact date of the incident, or the cost of the damage and cleanup have been reported.
The playground, named "Sport Illumina," was inaugurated on 16 October 2026 in the Sant'Antonio district, near the Circumvesuviana station. The ceremony was attended by Andrea Abodi, Minister for Sport and Youth.
The facility is part of the "Sport Illumina" project, carried out by Sport e Salute and promoted by Minister Abodi. National news agency ANSA also covered the inauguration, which included a second new "Illumina" playground in Aversa.
The project was presented as an urban regeneration initiative, offering a public space for sport and social life. The via Lamaria site is equipped mainly for basketball and parkour.
What remains unclear is whether the announced surveillance measures have been installed, and whether investigations have identified those responsible. For now, the confirmed point is that the site has been cleaned and its programmed activities are continuing.
