Torre Annunziata will celebrate its patron, the Madonna della Neve, with a leaner festival this autumn. The city's special commission has allocated 19,500 euros to the feast, covering half of the 39,000-euro programme presented by the Basilica.
The decision sets the tone for this year's votive edition: a more sober staging, with decorative lights reduced and concentrated around the Basilica rather than extended along the town's main corso in the form seen in previous years.
October 22 remains the heart of the feast
The central date remains October 22, the heart of the autumn votive observance. According to local devotional tradition, lava from Vesuvius stopped before the image of the Madonna in 1822, an episode still remembered as the origin of the October act of thanks.
The advertised calendar places the October 22 procession at piazza Giovanni XXIII, home to the Basilica Pontificia di Maria Santissima della Neve, with a route along the town's main streets.
A combined religious and civic programme
The autumn programme runs from October 13 to 24 and combines religious celebrations and processions with meetings on local history, children's activities, sporting events, concerts and shows.
It is a civic as well as a religious calendar: alongside Masses and processions, the published programme lists cultural appointments, activities for children and evening entertainment.
Two feasts, not one continuous festival
Visitors should not confuse the October feast with the summer celebration held in early August. They are two distinct moments in honour of the same patron.
The summer feast, associated with August 5, recalls the tradition of the recovery of the icon by fishermen and includes a re-enactment at sea. The 2026 summer edition ran from August 5 to 9 and included a procession at sea, the Porto Food Fest, a town procession and a closing fireworks display on August 9.
The October edition is the votive feast linked to the 1822 tradition, with its own processions and cultural programme.
What to know if you go
The reference point for the feast is the Basilica Pontificia di Maria Santissima della Neve in piazza Giovanni XXIII, Torre Annunziata. That square is the starting point for the October 22 procession and the focus of this year's lighting.
Expect a more concentrated layout than in past years: lights and gatherings will cluster around the Basilica area. For the main procession day, plan around the October 22 route through the town centre and check the final schedule locally, as details of individual evening events may change.
