Giuseppe Laudati, 71, died at the Moscati hospital in Avellino after his condition deteriorated following an earlier hospital stay, according to a report by IrpiniaNews.
The earlier hospitalization followed an alleged assault connected to a dispute with the neighboring owner of an agricultural property in Forino. The report identifies Laudati as a former Army marshal.
The investigation involved three people under investigation: two doctors, in connection with alleged professional negligence related to death or personal injury in healthcare, and a 40-year-old man, in connection with a possible charge of manslaughter beyond intent, known in Italian law as omicidio preterintenzionale.
The prosecutor ordered a medico-legal examination to investigate the circumstances of the death. According to the report, the notices to the people under investigation were procedural measures allowing potentially involved parties to take part in the non-repeatable technical examination.
The victim's family filed a complaint and asked investigators to establish whether there was a connection between the assault, the clinical management during the earlier hospitalization, and the death.
What remains unclear is central to the case. The medico-legal findings and definitive cause of death were not available in the report. The existence of a causal link between the alleged assault, the earlier hospital treatment, and the death remained under investigation, and the report does not establish criminal responsibility. The allegations had not reached a final judicial determination.
