Campania has approved the twentieth update to its regional list of monumental trees. Under Regional Executive Decree No. 147 of 5 October 2026, 26 new specimens join the census, bringing the regional total to 443 recorded trees.
The new entries were assessed favourably by the regional technical commission on 30 September 2026. The decree publishes the "Ventesimo elenco regionale degli alberi monumentali della Campania" with an annex giving, for each tree, the species, municipality, locality, coordinates, measurements and the monumentality criterion applied.
What changed in this update
The update adds 26 specimens to the existing regional census. All 26 applications considered in this round received a favourable technical evaluation.
After the update, the Campania regional list comprises 443 monumental trees.
The decree provides for transmission of the updated list to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests (MASAF), as well as to the municipalities and other bodies concerned.
Where the new trees are
The new listings concern municipalities in the provinces of Caserta, Naples and Salerno.
Examples named in the decree annex include a Judas tree at Piana di Monteverna, a wild linden at Marano di Napoli, a downy oak at Castelcivita, and a group of trees at the Villa Comunale Wenner in Scafati.
The regional announcement does not give a province-by-province or municipality-by-municipality breakdown of the full 443-tree list. For the new entries, the decree annex is the reference for exact species, locality and coordinates; the entry for one of the Scafati specimens does not include complete geographic coordinates in the annex.
Why these trees were listed
The monumentality reasons used in this update cover four categories:
- age and size
- ecological value
- historic, cultural and religious value
- landscape value
These are the formal criteria recorded in the annex for each specimen, alongside its dimensions and location. Readers consulting the decree can therefore see not only what species was listed and where, but on what grounds it was considered monumental.
From the regional list to the national census
The regional list feeds into the national census of monumental trees maintained by MASAF.
The most recent national update cited in the validated research, approved on 23 October 2025, added 211 trees or homogeneous systems across eleven regions, including Campania, bringing the national total to 4,944 trees or homogeneous systems.
The regional announcement does not identify which of the 26 newly listed Campania specimens have already been included in the MASAF national list.
