Antonio Durante, 53, accused of killing his 85-year-old mother by suffocation in a home on Via Nicotera, remains in prison pending a decision by the judge, according to reporting by Il Mattino's Salerno section.
During his guarantee interrogation, Durante substantially confirmed the confession he had previously given to the Carabinieri, the newspaper reported.
Durante described a prolonged situation of isolation and difficulty caring for his elderly, non-self-sufficient mother and his brother, who has schizophrenia. He said he had returned to live with his family after his father's death and had given up his relationship and his son to care for them.
His lawyer requested house arrest, arguing that Durante was not dangerous and that the circumstances of the case were incompatible with imprisonment. The judge had reserved a decision on whether to validate the detention or issue a new precautionary custody order.
The account reflects the accused's statements as reported during the investigation. No final court judgment has been reached, and the judge's final decision was still pending at the time of the report.
