A 23-year-old woman was stabbed in the back of the neck in the historic center of Salerno on the evening of 23 September 2026, and police have now traced an alleged attacker to Ariano Irpino.
What happened
The attack took place at around 9:30 p.m. in Largo San Tommaso d'Aquino, in central Salerno. According to the victim's account reported by investigators, she was approached from behind by a stranger and stabbed in the nape of the neck.
Emergency responders from 118 treated her at the scene and transported her to hospital under a red emergency code. She was discharged the following day with a 21-day prognosis. Sources also report that she required a blood transfusion.
How the suspect was identified
The investigation was carried out by the Salerno Flying Squad, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office. Investigators developed the identification by comparing images connected to the attack.
Police then released still frames showing the alleged attacker and asked members of the public for information. At that stage, investigators had narrowed their focus to a suspect but were still working to establish his identity when the image was made public.
Detention in Ariano Irpino
According to Il Mattino, the alleged perpetrator is a 57-year-old man traced overnight in Ariano Irpino and now held in the local prison.
His lawyer says he declares himself innocent. His identity has not been published in the sources consulted.
What remains unclear
Several key points have not been clarified in the reporting consulted:
- The outcome of any judicial validation of the detention and any final charges have not been reported.
- No motive for the attack has been indicated.
- The case concerns an alleged perpetrator; criminal responsibility has not been established.
Readers should therefore treat the detention as a precautionary step in an ongoing judicial process, not as a finding of guilt.
