An evening attack in Salerno's historic center has left a 23-year-old woman hospitalized and police searching for an unidentified assailant. The assault took place on the evening of Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in the area of Largo San Tommaso d'Aquino, according to reports from Il Mattino Salerno and AGI.

The young woman was struck with a cutting weapon to the back of the neck. After the attack, she fled along a stairway and reached Largo San Tommaso d'Aquino, where she was aided.

She was assisted by a passerby and then transported by emergency services to hospital in red-triage status. Reporting at the time indicated she was not in life-threatening condition. One later report described a wound of about seven centimetres to the nape of the neck, along with a hand wound.

The Salerno Squadra Mobile is leading the investigation. Investigators are comparing the victim's account with witness statements, blood traces, recorded movements and surveillance-camera images.
