A 44-year-old man of Romanian origin has died at the specialist burns unit of the Cardarelli hospital in Naples after suffering severe burns in an apartment fire in Capaccio Paestum, in the province of Salerno.
The man had burns over about 80% of his body. He was first taken to the hospital in Roccadaspide and was then transferred by air ambulance to the Centro Grandi Ustionati at Cardarelli, where he later died.
Fire in an apartment in Via Chiorbo
The fire broke out inside an apartment in Via Chiorbo, in the municipal territory of Capaccio Paestum. Two people were involved: the 44-year-old man, who was seriously injured, and his partner, who was also in the building but was unharmed.
Early reports mentioned a possible explosion. According to the first reconstruction, however, it had not been established whether an explosion had occurred or whether it had caused the fire.
Emergency response
Firefighters from the Agropoli detachment intervened to extinguish the blaze and secure the apartment. Medical personnel from the 118 emergency service provided first aid, and the Carabinieri attended for rescue support and subsequent inquiries.
The severity of the victim's burns required a two-stage hospital transfer: initial treatment at Roccadaspide, followed by the specialist burns centre at Cardarelli in Naples.
What investigators still need to establish
The exact cause of the fire remained under investigation. In particular, authorities had not yet determined how the flames started or spread inside the apartment, or whether there was any connection to the reported possible explosion.
The sources consulted did not publish the man's name, nor did they clarify the precise time the fire started or the full sequence of events leading to its spread.
