Prosecutors have requested a seven-year prison sentence for former Capaccio Paestum mayor Franco Alfieri in the first-instance trial over alleged rigged public contracts for public lighting in the town.
The request was made by public prosecutor Francesco Rotondo before the Court of Vallo della Lucania. According to the validated reporting, the request amounts to six years and six months, increased to seven years in total, plus a 500-euro fine.
For Alfieri's sister, Elvira Alfieri, the prosecution requested acquittal on the grounds that the alleged act did not exist.
The lighting contracts at the center of the case
The proceeding concerns alleged bid-rigging in the award of works to upgrade and improve the efficiency of street and municipal lighting in Capaccio Paestum.
The initial investigation focused on negotiated procedures for those public works, with awards to the company Dervit under the prosecution's account. Prosecutors allege that the award procedures were distorted through collusion and other fraudulent means.
The reported charges in the trial include rigging of public tenders, corruption for acts contrary to official duties, and, for Alfieri, false statements in a public document.
Who is on trial
Those charged in the case, in various capacities, are Franco Alfieri and Elvira Alfieri, along with Vittorio De Rosa, Alfonso D'Auria, Andrea Campanile and Carmine Greco.
Reporting indicated that a first-instance verdict was expected on 19 November 2026.
From town hall and province leadership to the courtroom
Alfieri was mayor of Capaccio-Paestum and president of the Province of Salerno when he was arrested in October 2024. A parliamentary record notes his arrest on 3 October 2024, his suspension from office and his announcement in February 2025 that he would resign from both posts.
The prosecution's requests do not constitute a judgment. The sources acquired do not report a final outcome for the trial. The accounts of the alleged conduct reported so far come from the prosecution case and press coverage of the proceedings, while the defense teams have denied or contested the charges.
