A 14-year-old girl in Afragola, in the Naples metropolitan area, told her mother she had been sexually abused for months by her uncle. Her account led to the arrest of the 41-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated sexual violence involving a minor.

According to the report in Il Mattino, the girl — identified in the article only by the pseudonym Angela — disclosed the alleged abuse after a period of silence and psychological distress. Her mother then reported the matter to the Carabinieri.

Disclosure and investigation

The investigation was coordinated by the Naples North Prosecutor's Office. The girl was interviewed with the support of a female marshal, a psychologist and a social worker, a procedure used to protect minors in sensitive cases.

Based on the evidence gathered, the Carabinieri executed a precautionary custody order against the uncle. He is accused of aggravated sexual violence against a minor.

Investigators also seized the suspect's phone, computer and other electronic devices for forensic examination. The report does not state what, if anything, was found on those devices.

A case still at an early stage

The man was awaiting a validation hearing at the time of the report. The allegations therefore remain unproven in court and should not be presented as a final conviction.

Afragola's mayor said municipal social services would provide support to the girl as the judicial process continues.
