Restoration work has started on the monumental entrance staircase, the Scalone, of the Royal Palace of Portici.
The intervention has a total value of €1.8 million and is expected to last approximately one year. The precise completion date has not been stated.
What the project covers
The project includes work on painted surfaces, stone elements, flooring, and painted and gilded wooden elements.
The works were designed and will be carried out by the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Metropolitan Area of Naples, with Tecnicon srl and Cosedo srl forming the appointed temporary business grouping.
A Bourbon staircase from around 1746
The staircase is part of the late-Baroque artistic and architectural heritage of the Bourbon Royal Site at Portici.
Its illusionistic architectural decorations are attributed to Vincenzo Re and date to around 1746, according to the heritage authority.
New lift to the museum route
A new lift will provide an alternative route to the first-floor museum area and improve accessibility.
The official heritage description confirms the lift alongside restoration of painted surfaces, marble, and flooring, linking the accessibility work to the museum route.
What visitors should know
The available reports give only an approximate duration of one year, without a detailed breakdown of the €1.8 million budget.
The sources do not specify whether the staircase or adjacent museum areas will remain fully open to visitors during construction. Visitors planning to see the Reggia di Portici in Portici should check opening and access information before travelling.
