Moments of fear in Barra, in eastern Naples, after pieces of the facade detached from an abandoned building and struck a girl walking on the pavement.

What happened

According to Il Mattino, the incident took place in the Rione Baronessa di Barra on the evening before the report was published. Tiles or marble pieces came away from the facade of a privately owned former mini-market that residents say has been abandoned for more than thirty years.

The falling material hit a girl who was passing underneath. Based on residents' accounts cited in the report, the girl was taken to an emergency department.

Emergency response

Residents alerted firefighters and police. Firefighters intervened to secure the facade, and orange safety netting was placed around the former supermarket to warn passers-by.

A building long reported as at risk

The report says the building had been repeatedly flagged as dangerous. Demolition had previously been discussed, with one proposal to clear the site to create parking spaces, but no demolition or permanent remediation is confirmed in the research.

What is not yet known

The girl's age, identity, and medical condition were not stated. The report does not include an official medical account confirming whether she was injured or hospitalized.

Responsibility for maintenance of the privately owned building has not been established in the material reviewed, and the reported history of warnings, attributed to a municipal councillor, is not independently corroborated here.
