An 18-year-old, Arcangelo Correra, died after being shot on 9 November 2024 in piazzetta Sedil Capuano in Naples.

Renato Benedetto Caiafa, described as Correra's childhood friend, was convicted at first instance by Judge Bove, according to Il Mattino. The newspaper's headline and opening report the sentence as 5 years and 8 months.

The key point of the ruling was the legal classification of the death. The judge treated it as involuntary manslaughter caused by negligence and lack of expertise, rather than intentional homicide.

That distinction rejected the prosecution case. Prosecutors had sought 20 years for intentional homicide with eventual intent.

The defense maintained that the shot was accidental and that Caiafa had not known the firearm was loaded and ready to fire. Il Mattino also reports that Caiafa assisted Correra after the shooting and took him to hospital.

The precise sentence requires confirmation from the judgment, as the same Il Mattino article later gives a different figure. What the ruling establishes for now is the court's finding: Correra's death was not treated as a deliberate attack, but as a fatal act of negligence.
