Naples Metropolitan Police have seized two nautical yards operating inside landscape-protected tuff caves in Posillipo, in an operation involving about 200 boats and an area of approximately 5,500 square metres.

According to Il Mattino, the yards included mechanical workshops and were allegedly operating without the required authorisations inside caves subject to landscape protection.

One of the caves is at Baia del Cenito, where investigators found what was described as an unauthorised boat garage with an attached workshop near the shoreline. The second cave was identified at Riva Fiorita, near Villa Rosebery, where officers found similar boat-storage and workshop activities.

Eight people were referred to the judicial authorities in connection with the operation.

The same investigation also led to the seizure of three other companies operating in the shipbuilding sector in the Giugliano in Campania area.

The identities of those referred and any subsequent judicial measures were not reported in the available source, nor was a breakdown of the boats between the two caves.
