A 67-year-old man from Pietramelara died in the car park outside the prison at Santa Maria Capua Vetere after travelling there to accompany a relative on a family visit.

According to Il Mattino, the man was Mario Tabbacchino. He had accompanied his daughter-in-law, who was visiting his son, and remained in the car rather than entering the prison.

The report says he may already have been experiencing the first symptoms of illness. Emergency medical personnel attended the scene but were unable to save him, and his death was confirmed there.

Il Mattino attributes the death to a heart attack. No independent medical statement confirming the cause was cited in the available reporting.

The newspaper reported that the funeral was scheduled for 16:00 at the Church of Sant'Agostino in Pietramelara.
