Vincenzo Fiano and Virginia Crovella have resigned from the coordination of Caserta Decide, the civic movement active in Caserta's local politics.
The announcement followed a well-attended assembly of the movement. According to Il Mattino's Caserta edition, both cited differing views over political methods and strategies as the city looks toward the next municipal elections.
Fiano argues that civic lists should help build a coalition based on political discontinuity and credible programmes, with a clear break from past political names. Crovella says left-wing civic groups are prepared to propose their own candidate for mayor of Caserta.
Neither has defined a formal next step, but both have left open the possibility of forming a new civic group.
The split was characterized by Francesco Apperti of Speranza per Caserta as a disagreement over methods and political strategies rather than goals or policy issues. Speranza per Caserta said it would attend a meeting of Caserta's progressive representatives on 22 September and continue collaborating with the civic groups linked to Fiano and Crovella.
No mayoral candidate has been identified, and it remains unclear whether Fiano and Crovella will formally launch a new list.
