Benevento's Democratic Party (PD) has started building a broad progressive alliance ahead of the 2027 municipal elections, calling civic groups and left-wing forces to a shared table and criticizing the administration led by Mayor Clemente Mastella.
The first step was a public meeting titled "Benevento: Risposte, Proposte e Nuovi Orizzonti," held at the Biblioteca provinciale "Antonio Mellusi" in Benevento. According to NTR24, the event was intended to open a discussion with citizens, associations, committees, progressive forces, and civic movements about an alternative for the city government.
City secretary Rosa Razzano announced one conference per month until March. No mayoral candidate has been named: the PD says the name should emerge from talks with all the forces taking part in the process.
Those reported present included representatives of Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra, Civico 22, Altra Benevento Possibile, Libera, WWF, Gioventù Federalista Europea, and PD officials. NTR24 also reported the absence of Five Star Movement figures, representatives of the Renzi area, and PSI councillors Miceli and Perifano, with some absences described as justified.
The PD contrasted the idea of a generic "campo largo" with the need to address Benevento's concrete problems, directing its criticism at the Mastella administration.
The calendar for the monthly conferences and the method for choosing the shared mayoral candidate have not yet been defined. The initiative remains at an early stage, and its future cohesion and electoral support cannot yet be assessed.
