Pompei's municipal solid-waste collection and disposal service is at the center of a political dispute over a municipal executive resolution adopted on 15 July 2026.
According to a report by Metropolis Web, representatives of the civic group Pompei Popolare, Gaetano Coccoli and Aldo Avitabile, sent a formal note to the mayor, the city executive and municipal councillors asking for an in-depth review of the resolution concerning the continuation of the waste service.
The group disputes whether the continuation qualifies as a lawful "proroga tecnica." Its argument, as reported, is that such technical extensions should be exceptional and linked to the start of a new tender procedure for the service.
The article quotes the resolution as stating that it "non costituisce approvazione del nuovo progetto di servizio né avvio della procedura di gara per il nuovo affidamento" — that is, it neither approves the new service project nor starts the procedure for awarding the new contract. Pompei Popolare cites that passage as central to its objection.
In the note, Pompei Popolare asked the municipality not to implement the act and to consider annulment by self-review of any related managerial determinations. The group described those possible related determinations as potentially unlawful and exposing the municipality to possible financial damage.

The full text, number and financial value of the 15 July 2026 resolution have not been independently verified, and no official procurement or court document confirming or rejecting the alleged illegality has been made public in the reporting. The municipality's response to the allegations is also not reported.
