A road collision on Via San Sossio in Somma Vesuviana led to the discovery of three bottles described as Molotov cocktails inside a Toyota driven by a 45-year-old Italian Army soldier.
According to reporting by Metropolis Web, Il Mattino and la Repubblica, authorities intervened after the crash and found the incendiary bottles in the soldier's car. One bottle had broken during the impact, a second was partly emptied and the third was intact.
The response involved Carabinieri, Army operational personnel from the Castello di Cisterna company and local police. The area was secured and bomb-disposal specialists from the Provincial Command of Naples were called to the scene.
The soldier was treated at Nola hospital and later discharged with a 10-day prognosis. He was arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession of explosive material and transferred to Poggioreale prison, Il Mattino reported.
A married couple travelling in the other vehicle involved in the collision was reported as unrelated to the discovery. The sources describe them as not seriously injured.
What investigators are still establishing
The central unanswered question is why the soldier was carrying the incendiary devices and where they were bound. The sources do not establish the origin of the bottles or their intended use.
The precise dynamics of the collision and responsibility for it also remain under investigation.
The arrest concerns an accusation at this stage. The reporting describes an arrest and suspicion of unlawful possession of explosive material, not a final judicial determination of guilt.
What the verified reporting confirms
Three independent local and national reports agree on the core sequence: a collision on Via San Sossio, the discovery of three suspected Molotov bottles in the soldier's Toyota, medical treatment at Nola hospital, and subsequent arrest.
Readers following the case should look for further official updates from the Carabinieri and the judicial authority on the charge, the results of technical examination of the seized bottles, and any clarification of the driver's account.
