Late in the afternoon of 29 September 2026, a fire broke out in the storage building of a plant nursery near the cemetery on Via Funari, in Ottaviano.
The blaze produced a tall column of black smoke, visible across the surrounding Vesuvian area. Several firefighter crews responded to bring the flames under control and prevent them from spreading to nearby structures.
According to initial accounts, plant-care materials, work equipment, and part of the vegetation kept inside the shed were burned. The area was cordoned off, and Civil Protection urged caution.
Mayor Ferdinando Federico said ARPAC, the regional environmental protection agency, had been alerted to check air quality and assess the possible presence of harmful substances. As a precaution, residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed and limit time outdoors.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and no official assessment of air quality, damage estimate, or report of injuries has been released.
