Diego could not wait for the delivery room. The newborn from Fisciano came into the world at 23:09 on the stretcher of an ambulance, five minutes after the vehicle reached the gynecological emergency department of the Ruggi hospital in Salerno.
The mother, a 27-year-old woman from the Villa area of Fisciano, had gone into advanced labor while being transported to the hospital. What began as a standard emergency transfer ended with a delivery inside the ambulance operated by the La Solidarietà association of Fisciano.
From home to hospital in a matter of minutes
The ambulance crew had been called for regular contractions occurring every three to four minutes. When responders arrived at the woman's home, the situation had already accelerated: her waters had broken and contractions were about ten seconds apart.
During transport, the Territorial Operations Center, known as COT, alerted the emergency department and arranged for gynecology and neonatal intensive care staff to be involved on arrival. The ambulance reached the gynecological emergency department at 23:04.
There was no time to move the woman to the delivery room. At 23:09, Diego was born on the ambulance stretcher after the vehicle had reached the hospital complex.
A chain of responders
The reports describe a coordinated response involving several services:
- the 118 operations center
- La Solidarietà of Fisciano, which operated the ambulance
- Alfa Fisciano
- MSB Mercato San Severino
- the Ruggi hospital
- the Territorial Operations Center
The COT played a central coordinating role, warning the emergency department in advance so that specialized hospital staff could meet the ambulance.
What the reports do not say
The local reports do not provide the mother's name or Diego's surname. They also do not state the medical condition of the mother or newborn after the delivery, and no independently published statement from the Ruggi hospital, the 118 service, or the family was included in the accounts reviewed.
The accounts also do not clarify the ambulance's precise position within the hospital grounds at the moment of birth, only that the vehicle had reached the gynecological emergency department and that transfer to the delivery room was no longer possible.
