Work has started to clear the historic Bourbon basins above Castellammare di Stabia after landslides struck the Pozzano area on 25 September 2026.

The first urgent operation focuses on the Scurolillo stream and other watercourses affected by the landslides. Crews are emptying the Bourbon basins, removing accumulated sediment and large stone blocks from the slopes, and restoring water flow.

The intervention follows an institutional meeting in the Prefecture of Naples, where urgent and structural measures were defined.

Urgent works first, structural works next

Local reports describe the basin clearing as an interim phase. It is meant to reduce immediate hydrogeological risk while further specialist planning proceeds with the Campania Region.

The broader, long-term plan concerns four streams: Foiano, Scuselle al Cognulo, Visanola and Piazza Grande.

Funding and tender

The planned structural works are allocated 10 million euros from CIPE 2010 funds, according to the local press reports. The municipality of Castellammare di Stabia has prepared the tender documents.

No official tender notice, engineering plan or municipal technical document was included in the acquired reports to independently verify the procurement details.

What is still unclear

The reports acquired do not provide a detailed timetable for completion of either the urgent clearing or the structural works.

They also do not specify the technical condition or capacity of each Bourbon basin, nor the full extent of current road, tunnel and access restrictions around Pozzano.

For readers in the Sorrento Peninsula and Naples area, the practical point is to treat the basin clearing as the start of a two-stage response: immediate emptying and slope clearing now, followed by larger works on the four streams once procurement and regional planning advance.
