Mercogliano has commemorated the 83rd anniversary of the death of Salvo D'Acquisto, the Carabinieri vice brigadier awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valour in memory.
The ceremony took place at the municipal villa and included the laying of a wreath for the fallen. It was organized by the Associazione Nazionale Carabinieri.
Those present included representatives of the Provincial Carabinieri Command, the Local Police, the mayor of Mercogliano, and students from the local comprehensive school.
D'Acquisto was executed by German troops in 1943 after taking responsibility for an incident in order to save civilian hostages held during a Nazi roundup.
After the wreath-laying, Captain Alessandro De Palma, commander of the Avellino Carabinieri Company, met with the students to discuss D'Acquisto's act and the contribution of Carabinieri personnel to the Resistance.
