Two men have been arrested by the State Police on suspicion of defrauding an 85-year-old woman, following a highway stop on the A16 in Irpinia.

The check took place on the A16 Napoli-Canosa motorway, in the municipality of Montemiletto, in the province of Avellino. Officers from the Avellino Ovest Traffic Police stopped the car after an alert issued by the Carabinieri in Matera, where the alleged scam had taken place earlier that same morning.

Inside the vehicle, officers found about 400 grams of precious objects of considerable value. The items were placed at the disposal of the judicial authority and were later returned to the victim, who recognized them as her own.

The allegations against the two men remain provisional. Under Italian procedure, guilt can only be established by a final court decision.

No further details — including the identities of those arrested or the judicial measures following the arrest — were provided in the source report.
