A 23-year-old woman was stabbed in the back of the neck on 23 September in or near Largo San Tommaso d'Aquino, in Salerno's historic centre, in an assault that prompted an emergency hospital response and a public appeal to identify the presumed attacker.
According to reports in Il Mattino and three corroborating local outlets, the emergency response began at approximately 21:30. The woman was transported to hospital in red code and required emergency treatment including blood transfusions. She was discharged the following day with a prognosis of 21 days.
The victim told investigators she was attacked from behind by an unknown man. She said he struck her with kicks and punches before stabbing her in the nape.
Investigation and surveillance images
Investigators from the Salerno Squadra Mobile, working under the coordination of the local prosecutor's office, identified a presumed attacker through investigative work and images.
Surveillance footage isolated the presumed attacker, and the prosecutor's office released an image to assist identification. Ondanews reported that investigators worked from video frames, while SalernoToday reported that the images were circulated as part of the identification effort.
Authorities said the man's formal identity had not yet been confirmed and appealed for public assistance. Residents, shopkeepers, and passers-by who were in the area were asked to come forward with information through the Salerno Questura and YouPol, the State Police reporting channel.
What remains unclear
The reports do not name the presumed attacker or give a confirmed identity. No arrest or formal charge is established in the available reports.
The motive for the assault remains unclear. The alleged sequence of kicks, punches, and the stabbing comes from the victim's account, and the full circumstances remain under investigation.
Anyone with direct information about the incident in Largo San Tommaso d'Aquino on that evening is asked to contact the Salerno police rather than circulate unverified claims about the suspect.
