Tonino Sacco, a 65-year-old resident of Ascea, died after suffering a sudden medical emergency while at a swimming pool in Acquavella, in the municipality of Casal Velino.
The incident took place at the Ardisani sports centre in the Bivio di Acquavella area. Acquavella is a hamlet of Casal Velino, in the Cilento area of the province of Salerno.
Prolonged resuscitation attempt
Rescuers from the Misericordia of Vallo della Lucania, operating from Omignano, intervened at the pool and carried out prolonged resuscitation attempts, including use of a defibrillator. The attempts lasted more than an hour but were unsuccessful.
An ambulance medical unit also attended the scene, along with Carabinieri from Acquavella. Authorities carried out initial checks into the circumstances of the death.
The precise medical cause of death had not been officially established in the reports available.

Sacco had worked for the Municipality of Ascea for 42 years and had retired only a few weeks before his death.
Ascea cancels weekend events
The Municipality of Ascea expressed condolences following his death and cancelled events planned across the municipality for the following weekend as a sign of mourning.
