The court of Torre Annunziata has sentenced a 38-year-old man from Qualiano to five years in prison for the robbery of an 89-year-old woman living on the Sorrentine Peninsula.
According to the case reported by Il Mattino, the man telephoned the woman claiming to be a member of the Carabinieri station in Sorrento and a friend of her son. He told her that a theft had supposedly taken place in Castellammare di Stabia involving a car with the same license plate as hers, and warned her that officers would search and turn over her home if she did not cooperate.
Under that pressure, the woman handed over cash and valuables. The total haul included cash, the exact amount of which was not specified, and precious objects weighing about two kilograms.
The court convicted the defendant of robbery and imposed a five-year prison term. The 89-year-old woman joined the proceedings as a civil party, represented by lawyers Giovanbattista Pane and Guido Di Nola.
The Carabinieri of Sorrento were continuing investigations into possible accomplices at the time of the report.
