Fear in Scampia on Wednesday evening after a man fired several shots, barricaded himself inside his apartment and attempted to set it on fire. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. in the Monte Rosa area, in traversa I Ippolito.
According to Il Mattino, neighbours first alerted emergency services after hearing the shots and fearing that a real firearm was being used. The weapon was later identified as a blank-firing pistol.
After firing, the man shut himself inside the home and tried to start a fire in the apartment. Police, firefighters and 118 medical crews attended the scene, which was cordoned off during the intervention.
Officers and emergency personnel brought the man to safety and took him away, reportedly for a compulsory health treatment, known in Italy as a TSO.
No identity for the man has been released, and there is no confirmed information on injuries or on damage caused by the attempted fire.
