The Sedil Dominova in Sorrento was placed under preventive seizure on 29 October 2026 as part of an investigation into the alleged unlawful occupation of a public building.
The measure was adopted by the Tribunale del Riesame after it upheld an appeal filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata. It was executed by the Coast Guard and the Guardia di Finanza.
At the center of the investigation is the continued presence of the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso in the building after the expiry of a loan-for-use agreement. According to press reconstructions cited in the validated reporting, the comodato expired on 23 December 2021.
The alleged offence under investigation is invasione di terreni o edifici pubblici, the unlawful invasion or occupation of public land or buildings. The property belongs to the Municipality of Sorrento and is subject to historic and artistic protection.
The reporting also describes a dispute between municipal offices and the extraordinary administration over the procedures for the release and use of the building.
The case remains at the preliminary-investigation stage. A preventive seizure and the formulation of an investigative hypothesis do not amount to a finding of guilt, and the sources consulted do not report a final judicial outcome or subsequent decisions.
A noble seat, then a workers' mutual-aid society
The Sedil Dominova is one of the surviving architectural testimonies of the noble seats of southern Italy. Since 1877 it has housed the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso and retains historic architectural features.
That long association helps explain why the building matters to readers beyond the immediate legal facts: it is both municipally owned heritage under protection and a place used continuously by the same association for almost 150 years.
What a preventive seizure means here
A preventive seizure is a precautionary measure ordered during an investigation. In this case, it was ordered by the review court, not as a final ruling on ownership or criminal responsibility, but pending further developments in the proceedings.
The full text of the Riesame order has not been independently verified through a judicial act or separate institutional statement in the sources consulted.
What is not yet known
The available reporting does not clarify what temporary use, if any, is planned for the building after the affixing of the seals, nor does it report the definitive outcome of the seizure or any later court ruling.
For visitors and residents, the practical point is straightforward: the Sedil Dominova, the Sorrento property associated since 1877 with the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso, is currently subject to a court-ordered seizure connected to an ongoing Torre Annunziata prosecution inquiry.
