The Cardarelli hospital in Naples has issued a preliminary response to a claim by a 36-year-old patient who says she was left sterile after treatment for a pregnancy loss in 2023.

According to reporting by Il Mattino, the woman was treated at Cardarelli after intrauterine fetal death at 17 weeks of pregnancy. She alleges that, during a cesarean procedure, doctors performed a bilateral ligation of her fallopian tubes without medical necessity and without her consent.

The patient has filed a report with the carabinieri and submitted her clinical documentation to a consultant engaged by her side for review.

Cardarelli has given a different preliminary account. The hospital says that its initial checks of the medical records have found no evidence of a procedure involving the uterine tubes — “non emergerebbe alcuna procedura che abbia interessato le tube uterine” — and that it will carry out further inquiries, including within the Gynecology department.

The two initial accounts therefore diverge. On the available reporting alone, it is not possible to establish whether the contested procedure was performed, whether there was any medical responsibility, or whether the patient’s infertility is linked to the procedure she describes or to another clinical cause.

The full clinical record, consent forms, and medico-legal assessment have not been made public in the material reviewed, and no final result from the hospital’s internal inquiries or from the investigation following the report has been reported.

Both accounts reported so far come from the same newspaper, and do not constitute independent corroboration.
