Schools of all levels, including nursery schools, have reopened in Pianura in western Naples following the fire at the local ecological station.

Outdoor sports activities have also been permitted to resume throughout the neighbourhood.

Precautionary closures after the fire

The fire occurred at the ecological station on Via Nelson Mandela in Pianura.

As a precaution while air quality was being assessed, schools were temporarily closed and outdoor sports were suspended. Residents were given precautionary advice until monitoring results became available.

What ARPAC monitored

The regional environmental agency ARPAC monitored airborne dioxins, furans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls.

ARPAC placed a high-flow air sampler near the fire to collect air samples for these pollutants. Il Mattino reported that the first monitoring results were favourable, with concentrations below scientific reference values, allowing schools and outdoor sports to resume.

The monitoring procedure described by ARPAC focuses on the sampling phase near the fire site. The acquired ARPAC page does not provide the complete later measurement dataset.

What reopening means

The reopening applies to schools of all levels in the Pianura area, including nursery schools.

The resumption of outdoor sports applies throughout the neighbourhood and followed the same favourable monitoring indication.

What remains unclear

The precise cause of the fire had not been established in the acquired sources.

The sources also do not establish whether the ecological station itself had fully resumed operations after the reopening of schools and outdoor sports.
