Overnight gunfire brought police to the Arenella district of Naples, where officers recovered four shell casings on Via Pietro Platania. The episode, reported as occurring shortly after 2 a.m., was described as the third intimidatory shooting — a "stesa" — in Naples in the space of about 24 hours.

According to Il Mattino, no one was injured and no property damage was reported at the Arenella scene.

What happened on Via Pietro Platania

Police intervened in Arenella after shots were fired during the night. On Via Pietro Platania, officers found four cartridge cases marking the place where the shots had been fired.

Il Mattino reported that there were no injuries and no damage to buildings, vehicles or other property. La Repubblica gave a partly different account, referring to three shots fired by two people travelling on a scooter. That detail — the number of shots and the description of the suspects — is not corroborated by the Il Mattino account.

The exact number of shots therefore remains inconsistent between the two reports: four shell casings recovered, according to Il Mattino, against three shots reported by la Repubblica.

Investigation under way

Police are investigating the incident. No motive has been established.

Investigators are reviewing footage from surveillance cameras in the area to reconstruct the movements before and after the shooting and to identify those responsible. No suspect identities or arrests were reported in the material acquired.

Possible intimidation, extortion-related pressure or a dispute involving youth gangs have been mentioned as hypotheses, but none has been confirmed.

A second episode 24 hours earlier in Fuorigrotta

The Arenella shooting followed another shooting in Fuorigrotta roughly 24 hours earlier, reported as a similar intimidatory episode.

Police have not established a link between the Arenella incident and the earlier Fuorigrotta shooting. Whether the episodes form part of the same dynamic or are separate incidents remains one of the open questions in the investigation.
