The Santa Maria di Pozzano tunnel on the SS145 Sorrentina, between Vico Equense and Castellammare di Stabia, reopened to traffic on 15 October 2026.
The reopening ended disruption that had begun after the severe storm of 25 September, when a landslide and flow of water and mud damaged the tunnel's fire-prevention system.
What had closed and why
The tunnel was closed following the 25 September downpour. Water, mud and landslide debris affected the area and damaged the fire-prevention equipment, requiring repair work before the tunnel could return to normal operation.
Road operator Anas carried out work to restore the fire-prevention system and its associated instrumentation. Reports describe repairs to equipment along the section between km 0.000 and km 3.700, while the tunnel's overall length is reported as about 5 km.
Reopening ahead of schedule
Circulation was restored in the early hours of 15 October, before the 7 a.m. time initially indicated for the return to normal traffic. Anas completed the restoration of the fire-prevention system ahead of the expected time, allowing the tunnel to reopen along its full length.
What changes for drivers
During the closure, traffic had used a temporary route through a bypass and the former coastal alignment of the SS145. With the reopening, that bypass arrangement was deactivated and full circulation through the tunnel was restored.
The closure had disrupted daily travel for commuters, workers, residents and tourists moving in the Sorrento Peninsula and between Castellammare di Stabia and the peninsula. Drivers on this corridor no longer need to follow the temporary diversion.
One of the sources consulted also reported that Via Acton, in Castellammare di Stabia, remained closed at the time of the tunnel reopening. That detail was not confirmed by the other sources, so drivers heading through Castellammare should check current local traffic notices before travelling.
