On September 18, 1977, Voyager 1 captured the first image in which Earth and the Moon appeared together in the same frame, from about 11.66 million kilometers away.

It was an early moment of distance. For the first time, home was not the ground underfoot or the sky overhead. It was a landscape seen from the outside.

In the 1977 image, Earth appears as a blue-and-white crescent, while the Moon is much smaller beside it. The Moon was artificially brightened so that it would remain visible next to the much brighter Earth. Together, the two bodies form a recognizable pair: one world, and its companion, suspended in darkness.

More than twelve years later, Voyager turned around again.

On February 14, 1990, Voyager 1 pointed back toward the inner Solar System and photographed Earth from about 6 billion kilometers away. The resulting image became known as the “Pale Blue Dot.”

The “Pale Blue Dot” was part of a sequence of 60 images conceived as a portrait of the Solar System. Earth is a bright point about one pixel across, caught in a ray of sunlight scattered through the camera optics.

Those pictures of Earth were taken shortly before Voyager 1 switched off its cameras permanently to save power. The name “Pale Blue Dot” is connected to Carl Sagan’s book of the same title; Sagan had proposed photographing Earth from that great distance.

How to read the two pictures

Look first at the 1977 photograph: Earth still has shape, color, and phase. You can see a crescent lit by the Sun, with blue and white tones. The Moon is faint and small, made brighter for visibility, but unmistakably present beside us.

Then look at the 1990 photograph: there is no crescent, no continent, no Moon beside us. Earth is reduced to almost a single luminous point, crossed by diffused light from the camera. What changed is not Earth itself, but distance.

Why the two dates belong together

The two images form a progression. In 1977, Earth and the Moon became an observable landscape from outside — a home we could recognize. In 1990, Earth shrank to a point almost indistinguishable in space.

That is the value of keeping both dates in mind. The first image says: this is where we live. The second adds: and this is how small, and how exposed, that place is.

Voyager did not discover another world on those two days. It looked back and recorded our own, first as a pair of neighboring worlds, then as a fragile point of light.
