San Martino Valle Caudina has inaugurated the renewed Piazza XX Settembre, returning the square to public use after it was destroyed by the flooding of 21 December 2019.
The reopening was marked by a public evening attended by the local community. The redevelopment was presented as the square's return to residents, with an emphasis on making it a safe, usable public space once again.
More than a square
The inauguration also became an occasion to discuss wider projects affecting the Valle Caudina. According to the local report, the speakers addressed the Cancello–Benevento railway, a proposed tunnel linking the Valle Caudina with the A16 motorway, and the Valle Caudina Masterplan.
Those cited as taking part included Mayor Pisano, Regional Councillor Maurizio Petracca and Campania Regional Vice President Mario Casillo.
Railway, road link and Masterplan
On the railway, Casillo described a timetable in which completion of the works would be followed by approximately four to five months of testing and authorization procedures by ANSFISA, Italy's rail safety agency.
On the broader planning front, the report says the Masterplan had received funding for its design phase, with the 13 mayors of the Caudina area expected to develop strategic projects for the valley.
The proposed tunnel to the A16 remains a proposal: the available report does not establish that it has been approved or funded.
