In Avellino, the experimental school street in Piazza Garibaldi has ended, and Legambiente Avellino–Alveare APS is asking the city to make it permanent.
The trial ran from 6 March to 26 June. During that period, vehicle access was restricted on Wednesdays and Fridays during student arrival and departure times, under an arrangement agreed with the Municipality of Avellino and the school. According to the local report, the experiment was extended twice and accompanied by monitoring by a technical panel, with positive findings reported.
Legambiente now proposes that the measure operate on every school day, with clear and stable rules communicated to families in advance. The association describes Piazza Garibaldi as a pilot project that could become the first element of a broader, multi-year programme of school streets in Avellino.
The Municipality has reportedly indicated an intention to continue the initiative. The reported next steps also include a Piedibus walking-bus service and road-safety education activities involving the Municipal Police.
