A wounded woodcock was found along the road connecting Perdifumo and Laureana Cilento, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The bird could not fly because of an injured wing, described in local reports as a broken wing.

The recovery was carried out through cooperation between the Park Authority, the Carabinieri Forestali and the WWF.

How the rescue unfolded

According to the reports, the chain of alerts began with municipal councillor Francesco Coccorullo, who reported the bird in difficulty. The report reached Park president Giuseppe Coccorullo and the Park Carabinieri, with coordination on the ground by the Agropoli Forest Carabinieri station.

Those named as taking part in the coordinated response were Francesco Coccorullo, Giuseppe Coccorullo, Marcello Russo, Patrizia Ferrara and Piernazario Antelmo.

WWF representative Piernazario Antelmo recovered the woodcock and took it into care, providing initial care and taking responsibility for its subsequent rehabilitation. The reported next step was rehabilitation, with the hope that the bird could eventually return to its natural habitat.

A protected area of national and international significance

The road between Perdifumo and Laureana Cilento lies inside a nationally and internationally significant protected area. The Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park covers approximately 181,000 hectares and is home to rich and varied fauna.

The Cilento and Vallo di Diano site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.

That scale and diversity help explain why a single injured bird on a local road brought several bodies into the same response: the Park Authority, the Forest Carabinieri and a conservation association active in wildlife care.

What is not yet known

The available reports do not confirm the woodcock's eventual recovery or release. They do not give the exact date and time of the rescue, provide no veterinary diagnosis beyond the reported wing injury, and do not identify the precise treatment or rehabilitation facility.
