A heavy goods vehicle transporting an excavator struck an overpass on the Salerno-Avellino motorway link, damaging part of the structure and sending debris onto the carriageway. The link has since been secured and reopened in both directions.

What happened

The impact occurred on the Salerno-Avellino raccordo, in the stretch between Lancusi and Baronissi, reported at km 6.350 in the northbound direction. The excavator hit the overpass with enough force to damage a beam and dislodge a portion of the bridge.

Falling rubble landed on the carriageway and struck at least one passing car, described as a Smart. Il Mattino reported that no one was injured, while ANSA reported that the drivers involved were in shock and were examined by medical staff.

Closure for checks and clearance

The link was temporarily closed in both directions to allow rescue operations, debris removal, surveys and structural checks on the overpass.

The closure lasted several hours. ANAS, the Stradale police, Civil Protection and other agencies worked at the scene under the coordination of the Prefecture of Salerno.

Reopening late on 29 October

After the safety work, traffic was restored in both directions late in the evening of 29 October 2026, at around 22:00.

According to ANSA, ANAS made the structure safe and removed the damaged beam sections that remained hanging after the impact.

Where the disruption occurred

For readers following the route, the incident point was the Lancusi-Baronissi section of the Salerno-Avellino link. That is the section that was closed in both directions during the surveys and clearance work, even though the reported impact was on the northbound side.

How long the disruption lasted

Traffic remained blocked for several hours before the evening reopening. Drivers crossing between Salerno and the inland direction toward Avellino on 29 October were therefore affected through the afternoon and evening, until circulation was restored at around 22:00.
