Two people have been reported to judicial authorities after a highway check on the A2 del Mediterraneo near Sala Consilina, in the province of Salerno. The operation was carried out by the Traffic Police officers of the Sala Consilina substation, who intercepted a car arriving from Reggio Calabria.
The vehicle was carrying a 38-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, both Italian nationals resident in Naples. According to the reports, both had prior records for similar offences. They were reported while at liberty for continued and aggravated fraud.
A search of the car led to the recovery of gold jewellery and about 1,000 euros in cash. Investigators consider these items to be the suspected proceeds of frauds committed shortly before against elderly victims.
The two suspects were also charged jointly with attempted computer fraud against a priest, who had been persuaded to arrange bank transfers worth several thousand euros. That transfer did not go through because the bank's antifraud system intervened and blocked the operation.
The people involved have been reported, not convicted, and criminal responsibility remains to be determined by the courts. The available reports do not identify the suspects by name, give the exact number of elderly victims, or provide independent detail on the methods used in the frauds against them. The total amount of the bank transfers requested from the priest has also not been specified.
