A young woman in her twenties was attacked and stabbed from behind by an unknown assailant in Largo San Tommaso d'Aquino, in Salerno's historic centre.
The incident occurred at approximately 21:30 on the evening of Wednesday 23 September, according to AGI and RaiNews.
The victim suffered a wound of approximately seven centimetres to the nape, on the right side, and an injury to her left hand, apparently sustained while attempting to protect herself.
A passer-by raised the alarm. Police attended the scene, and the woman was transported to hospital in red code. Doctors determined that she was not in life-threatening danger, and she was subsequently discharged after medical examinations and treatment.
The woman told police that she did not know the attacker. She provided a physical description of the suspected attacker, including olive-coloured skin and prominent cheekbones.
Investigations by the police Mobile Squad remain ongoing to identify the person responsible and to establish the motive.
What is still unclear is the exact sequence of the attack and the reason behind it. The available reports do not establish whether the incident was an attempted robbery, a random assault, or related to another cause, and they do not indicate that a suspect has been identified or arrested.
Reports differ on the victim's precise age, identifying her as 23 or approximately 20.
