A heavy goods vehicle overturned on the Autostrada A2 del Mediterraneo, in the southbound direction, near the San Mango Piemonte exit in the province of Salerno.
According to Il Mattino Salerno, the truck lost control and overturned at kilometre 9. Two other local reports place the crash a short distance before the same exit, also in the southbound direction.
Driver trapped, then freed by firefighters
The driver remained trapped inside the cab after the overturn.
Firefighters extracted him from the vehicle, and he was then transferred urgently to hospital, Il Mattino reports.
The incident caused temporary slowdowns while rescue work and securing of the stretch took place.
Police attended to record the details of the crash and manage the scene.
Cause still to be established
The cause has not been established.
The hypotheses reported by Il Mattino include a sudden illness and a moment of drowsiness at the wheel, alongside other possible accidental causes. None of these hypotheses has been confirmed by the investigations.
Conflicting early accounts of injuries
Early reports differ on the driver's condition.
Il Mattino reports that the driver was injured, had to be extracted, and was hospitalised. SalernoToday reported that there were no serious consequences, while SalernoNotizie reported, on the basis of initial information, that the driver had apparently suffered no injuries.
No detailed medical diagnosis or exact extent of any injuries has been made public.
Location detail
All three sources agree on the essential location: the A2 del Mediterraneo, southbound, in the area of the San Mango Piemonte interchange.
Il Mattino gives the precise reference as kilometre 9. The secondary reconstructions describe it more generally as shortly before the San Mango Piemonte exit.
