A fire affecting a front of more than one kilometre has been reported on a hillside at San Nicola, a hamlet of Centola in the province of Salerno.

According to the report, some homes were present on the hill affected by the fire. At the time of reporting, those homes were not considered in immediate danger.

The response involved two teams from the Bussento, Lambro and Mingardo Mountain Community. Support from a regional aircraft was requested. Carabinieri Forestali from Pisciotta attended the scene to investigate in order to establish the cause.

The cause of the fire was not confirmed in the report. The material acquired does not confirm whether the fire was fully extinguished or whether the requested aircraft intervention took place.

What is confirmed and what is not

What the report establishes is the location and the scale of the front: San Nicola di Centola, with a fire front extending for more than one kilometre across a hillside.

What it does not establish is the final burned area. The source reports the length of the fire front, not a measurement in hectares destroyed.

No injuries, evacuations or property damage are reported in the material acquired.

Separate fires in Centola are not part of this incident

Centola and the wider Cilento area have been affected by other fires involving Mediterranean vegetation, but the available reports describe separate incidents that should not be merged with the San Nicola event.

One separate fire in the Lacci area of Centola involved several hectares of Mediterranean scrub and century-old olive trees. Ground crews, firefighters and a helicopter took part in that response.

An earlier fire near Palinuro, within the municipality of Centola, burned several hectares of Mediterranean scrub inside the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Firefighters extinguished that fire after about four hours.

These cases provide context that fires affecting Mediterranean scrub have previously been recorded in the Centola area. They do not provide information about the origin, extent or outcome of the San Nicola fire.

Investigation under way

The origin of the San Nicola fire remained under investigation by the Carabinieri Forestali at the time of reporting. Readers should rely on further official updates for confirmation of the burned area, containment and cause.
