Seventeen years after the killing of Mariano Bacioterracino in via Vergini, in Naples' Sanità district, the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) has ordered new arrests.
According to Il Mattino, those arrested include Oscar Pecorelli, who was already detained in Milan, and an alleged accomplice. Investigators allege that the second man drove the scooter used to reach the scene of the shooting.
The case concerns the 2009 killing of Bacioterracino in via Vergini. During the original investigation, prosecutors publicly released video footage of the shooting after having difficulty identifying the alleged gunman.
That earlier investigation focused on Costanzo Apice, identified by investigators and some collaborators of justice as the alleged material executor — the man in the cap seen in the video. Apice was later acquitted after the court found insufficient correspondence between his physical characteristics and the person shown in the footage.
Investigators connect the alleged motive to Bacioterracino's past accusation in a killing involving the Moccia family. That reconstruction remains subject to judicial assessment, and the new arrests concern allegations that do not establish final criminal responsibility.
The identity of the alleged scooter driver was not stated in the reporting available, and the final procedural outcome of the new case has not been established.
