Daniel, the young Swedish man who spent several weeks living inside Naples' Capodichino airport after losing contact with his family, has returned to Sweden with his father.
The return came less than 48 hours after Naples municipal social services took charge of his case, according to Il Mattino. After leaving Naples, Daniel met his father in Rome, spent time at the embassy, and then flew with him to Sweden.
City councillor for social policies Chiara Marciani, who followed the case, described Daniel as a quiet young man who disclosed little about what had happened to him.
His parents had not heard from him since August, according to Tgcom24. Once contact was re-established, Daniel accepted transfer to a temporary accommodation facility while social workers and diplomats arranged support for his return.
What happened at Capodichino
Daniel had been living inside the airport terminal for weeks before help reached him. Airport personnel, municipal social workers and Swedish diplomatic representatives contributed to reconnecting him with his family and arranging assistance, according to Corriere della Sera and Tgcom24.
The Municipality of Naples worked with the Swedish Embassy and the Swedish Consulate to support the process. Marciani credited the patient work of social workers and the cooperation between the institutions involved.
How the return was arranged
The practical path home was built in stages: temporary accommodation in Naples, reconnection with the family, travel to Rome to meet his father, time at the embassy, and then the joint flight to Sweden.
Marciani has spoken of the solidarity shown in Naples around the case, summed up in the line quoted by Il Mattino: Naples has a big heart.
A message from home
Daniel's mother thanked Marciani privately on Instagram, accompanying her message with a heart, according to Corriere della Sera.
Much remains unclear, including the reasons for Daniel's loss of contact and his movements between late August and his discovery at the airport. What the reporting confirms is that a coordinated effort by airport staff, city social services and Swedish diplomats brought a vulnerable young man back to his family.
